Last week, Google announced Explore with Google Maps. The latest version of the map helps you find what you’re looking for or helps you find something to do that is nearby. It even takes the time of day and the local weather into account according to a Google products blog post. The app can give you a customized listing of businesses near you.

When you press the “Explore” icon within Google Maps, you can find a local business that’s within walking or driving distance. The app will use data from Google+ Local profiles (Google My Business listings) to help you find the perfect place to do something. It will include ratings, and, if necessary, public transportation schedules. And, after confirming with the app where you went, the app will learn to become more predictive for you.

What does this mean for local business owners? In short, make sure your Google+ Local profile is accurate and up-to-date. That is because the data is pulled from these profiles to recommend business for Explore users. Don’t forget to list your hours of operation. As mentioned, the Google Maps app takes into account time of day when recommending businesses. Additionally, add attractive photos to your listing and make sure that your “About” description is rich with detail. Further, the more legitimate reviews your business has, the better. That way a potential customer can get a sense of your business, and will hopefully choose you over a competitor.
